Learning for the Whole Person
Find quick answers to your questions about our programs and offerings.
How old should my child be to attend your camp?
Our camps are designed for incoming 6th and 7th grade students. Younger and older students are less likely to have a positive experience, and so we discourage younger and older students from registering.
What language will the students learn?
We will be learning the Python programming language.
Do students need prior programming experience?
No, students do not need prior programming experience. All that’s needed is for the student to be able to type at a reasonable pace and perform at grade-level both academically (especially math and science) and developmentally. In fact, as the camp is designed for beginners to coding, if a student has already had substantially experience with coding, he/she may find the camp uninteresting.
What topics will be covered?
This week-long day-camp will introduce students to the basic structures of the Python programming language. We will cover variables and expressions, lists of values, using functions, strings, branching, looping, and basic graphing. We will learn programming while exploring the natural world, all with an eye on encouraging the development of character and virtue.
Are the sessions different from each other?
Each session offers the same instructors and general learning experiences. The only substantive difference are the dates of each session. Just choose the week that fits your child’s schedule!
How many students will there be in a summer camp session?
There will be a maximum of 16 students in a summer camp session.
Are the outdoor activities just free play?
Our outdoor activities will be fun and opportunities for the students to discover and explore. But, they are not merely times for “free play.” Instead, they will be intentionally designed to help the students learn about programming and science. For instance, the students might be tasked to collect a number of different plant leaves to measure in the classroom or to take measurements of trees around the park. We will then write Python programs to analyze and visualize the data.
What will the character and virtues instruction entail?
Our focus will be on building and valuing individual responsibility. We will encourage students to behave with honesty, respect, kindness, sharing, and a heart of service. This will be practiced throughout the day as the students work individually and in teams.
Who will teach the camps?
Johnny and Karen Lin will be the primary instructors for all sessions. Their high school-aged sons will assist. Johnny is a long-time college faculty member, and together they have decades of instructional experience.
Is this a religious camp?
The camp sessions are held at a private Christian school. While Wholesome Learning, LLC and the camps we run are separate entities from this school, we expect students to behave respectfully, in general alignment with the school’s code of conduct. The instructors are also Christians, and we will include Bible verses in our discussions on character and virtues. The camp, however, is not a religious camp per se and is not operated by a church or religious institution. We welcome all students, religious and non-religious alike.
Is financial aid available?
Need-based financial aid is available to a limited number of students. Please contact us by email at yourfriends@wholesome-learning.com if you are interested in our financial aid program.
How will I know my student is registered?
We will confirm your student’s registration status by email. Students are registered on a first-come, first-served basis, based on receipt of registration and payment. A student is considered completely registered when: (1) we have received completed and signed forms and agreements, and (2) the student has paid a deposit (before or on June 15) and in full after June 15. A student who is registered before or on June 15 by virtue of deposit becomes unregistered on June 16 if he/she has not paid in full, at which point we can cancel their registration and register a student from the waitlist.
What is the deposit? When is the full tuition payment due?
Parents may choose to pay the full tuition at registration or pay a $100 deposit to hold a spot but will need to pay the balance no later than June 15 for the early-bird special or June 30 otherwise. If the balance is not paid, their spot will be given to another student on the waitlist.
How do I make payments?
After you submit the registration form, you will be automatically redirected to the payment website where you will be given two options of amounts to pay at this time (either $100 deposit or in full) and two options of means to pay (either with credit card or using Zelle to yourfriends@wholesome-learning.com).
Note that paying by credit card costs an additional 3% admin fee. Paying by Zelle does not cost an additional admin fee.
What is your refund policy?
If You Cancel:
- The $100 deposit is non-refundable, as it is used towards materials and upfront expenses. The exception is if we cancel the session.
- You may receive a refund of payments, less the deposit, on or before June 15. The refund will be made via your method of payment. Only early-bird registrants are eligible for monetary refunds.
- If you need to cancel between June 15 and 7 days before the camp session begins (both dates inclusive), you will not receive a refund but will receive a credit voucher entitling your student to enroll in a future camp session through August 31, 2026, subject to availability. Currently, no sessions are scheduled after August 22, 2025. If no later session are scheduled in the future, the voucher has no value.
- We will not provide refunds for cancellations made less than 7 days of the start of the camp. If your child is sick or the family experiences extreme hardship (e.g., a death in the family), however, your student will be allowed to attend any missed days at a future camp session through August 31, 2026, subject to availability. Currently, no sessions are scheduled after August 22, 2025. If no later session are scheduled in the future, the voucher has no value.
If We Cancel: We will make a refund of all payments (including the deposit) via the initial method of payment.
